Till this day, Sourav Ganguly remains one of the most successful captains India has ever had. Armed with exquisite batting skills that prompted Rahul Dravid to say “In off-side first there’s God, and then there’s Ganguly” and impeccable overseas records as captain, Ganguly is currently the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). However, his former teammate and veteran Indian batsman, Virender Sehwag feels Ganguly will be BCCI President and the Cheif Minister of West Bengal someday soon.
Recently, Yuvraj Singh and Sehwag, along with Ganguly were present at the launch of the latter’s autobiography “A Century is not enough” In New Delhi. Speaking in the event, both Singh and Sehwag acknowledged Ganguly’s role in having shaped their cricketing career. The trio spoke at length on various issues like the appointment of coaches for the Indian team and also shared some anecdotes from their playing days.
Sehwag predicts big things in the future for Sourav Ganguly
As reported by India Today, Sehwag responded generously in reply to the speculations of Ganguly being one of the contenders for the top role at the BCCI. He said, “Dada (Ganguly) will 100 per cent become the chief minister of Bengal one day. But before that he will become the president of BCCI.” Ganguly has been at the helm of the CAB ever since the demise of former CAB President, Jagmohan Dalmiya in 2015. The ‘Prince of Calcutta’ is also a part of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), alongside the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman.
Yuvraj Singh has always credited Ganguly with the success he’s been able to achieve in International Cricket. Echoing his previous sentiments, Singh said, When I arrived into the scene, Dada said ‘after a long time, we have a good fielder in Indian team.’ After a couple of good knocks, I failed in the following innings and struggled against spin. But he (Ganguly) backed me because he knew that I was a match winner.”
Explaining the reason behind why he’d backed young talents like Sehwag, Singh and Harbhajan Singh, Ganguly said, “Yuvraj, Viru and Harbhajan were always talented, and I knew that. First thing I had to do was to get that fear of failure out of their minds because when I came into the side, I faced that situation (fear of failure). I remember once selectors told me not to take Viru to South Africa (2001) because he is not a good player of fast bowling. But I insisted on him taking along and he scored a Test century on debut at Bloemfentein.”
