The wait for the 2022 T20 World Cup is almost over, with the first game of the impending tournament set to commence in less than a week's time between Sri Lanka and Namibia Geelong Cricket Ground in Victoria. The clash between the two sides are part of the Group Stage fixture before the Super 12 stage kicks off on the 22nd of October.
Sri Lanka, the surprise winners of the recently concluded Asia Cup tournament will hope to seal their passage to the next stage of the tournament as the top two teams from each group of the initial round of fixtures will join the already qualified eight teams in Super 12.
While the Islanders are the favorite heading into the fixture, their opponents in the curtain raiser, Namibia are currently on a winning streak of six matches in the shortest format of the game. They will square off against Ireland and Zimbabwe in the warm-up fixtures before their clash against the Asian champions.
The Subcontinent side will also play a couple of warm-up games against Zimbabwe and Ireland to get a better understanding of the conditions Down Under before starting their World Cup campaign against Namibia. Their vigor has been reinstated following their triumph in the continental tournament earlier this year and will be hoping for a similar output in the upcoming tournament.
Sri Lanka and Namibia have previously clashed on just a solitary occasion, coming in the last year's T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi. The Asia outfit won the game comprehensively by seven wickets after restricting Namibia to a paltry total of just 96 runs. Maheesh Theekshana was the star of the show with impressive bowling figures of 3/25, while Bhanuka Rajapaksa's blistering knock with the bat guided them to a comfortable win after an early stutter.
