Umpire Rod Tucker took a dig at Sri Lankan opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne after he reviewed an LBW decision when the hosts were batting in their first innings on Day 2. The two countries are playing the first of the three Tests at Galle.

Dimuth Karunaratne hit a boundary off the first ball in the second over of Sri Lanka’s first innings off Umesh Yadav’s bowling. But the very next ball was a jaffa as it swung in late and struck the left-hander in front of the stumps. The batsman consulted his partner and went up for a review.

The replays suggested that he was plumb in front of the wickets and the ball was going to strike the middle stump. The third umpire who was in charge of the review wasn’t impressed by batsman’s action to have a look. Tucker was caught on air saying, “This doesn’t look like a great review does it? It looks very much like it’s hitting middle and leg stump”.

Earlier, India put up a mammoth 600 in the first innings after choosing to bat first, on the back of splendid centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara and Shikhar Dhawan, who was playing Test cricket after a long time. Test debutant Hardik Pandya also chipped in with a half century, and other significant contributions came from Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin.

In the answer to the first innings, the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They were bundled out for 291, which meant India got a lead of 309 runs. The crucial contributions came from the bats of former skipper Angelo Matthews, who scored 84, and Dilruwan Perera, who scored an unbeaten 92. The wrecker in chief from India was Ravindra Jadeja who picked up three wickets and was supported by pacer Mohammed Shami who dismissed two batsmen.

A long tour ahead

Even with a lead of 309 runs, Virat Kohli didn’t enforce follow-on and India finished Day 3 with 189 for 3. Abhinav Mukund top scored with 81.

India are in Sri Lanka to play three Tests. five ODIs and a solitary T20. It is the first major assignment for new coach Ravi Shastri.
