Recent reports suggest that the national cricket stadium in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia is to be renamed after victorious West Indies skipper Darren Sammy. The Beausejour Cricket Ground will now be known as the Darren Sammy National Cricket Ground, with one of the stands to be named in honour of fellow St Lucian and World T20 winner Johnson Charles.
Sammy led the West Indies to their second title triumph in the recently concluded World T20 in India. Such was the impact of the West Indies win, that the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Kenneth D Anthony congratulated the St. Lucian representatives in the West Indies side. Openers Johnson Charles and skipper Darren Sammy were the only players from St. Lucia in the triumphant West Indies side.
“The West Indies Cricket Board would like to congratulate West Indies captain, Darren Sammy and opener, Johnson Charles for the honour their home country St Lucia has bestowed on them,” the WICB added in a statement, issued from their St John’s, Antigua, headquarters.
The WICB released a statement saying that the announcement had been made by the Prime Minister following a ‘welcome ceremony’ in the Island.
However, the World T20 triumph has done little to bridge the gap between the players and the board. The comments made by Darren Sammy has been termed ‘inappropriate’ by WICB president Dave Cameron.
Cameron however, reiterated that it was important for the players and the board to find a common ground following years of dispute.
“We want to see how we can find common ground in ensuring that the best players in the region are available for selection for West Indies teams,” Cameron said.
