Even as limited-overs cricket has made the headlines more often than not, Test cricket also have had its say in the last year. At the fag end of 2018, as many as three Tests are underway, all of them starting on December 26, Boxing Day. On a number of instances, batsmen have dominated the bowlers, but teams have also have done well as far as bowling is concerned.

Among the Test-playing nations, South Africa have been the most prolific as far as picking up regular wickets is concerned in 2018. Prior to their ongoing Test against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion, they boasted of a bowling average of 23.35, i.e, at an average, they concede those many runs for every wicket, which aren’t measly numbers by any means.

Australia at rock bottom

Second on the list is Pakistan with an average of 24.15 in nine encounters as Sarfraz Ahmed and Co have managed to produce the quality fast bowlers. However, it’s their batsmen, who let the team down on a few instances. India have an incredible bowling lineup, which performed exceptionally in overseas conditions and they picked up wickets at an average of 24.55.

Moreover, Virat Kohli’s have also played the most number of matches this year (14). Bangladesh and Sri Lanka’s bowlers were also decent with an average of 26.65 and 28.33 respectively, but their batting didn’t lend appropriate support to the bowlers. England, New Zealand and Zimbabwe are the next three teams in the list. Australia are placed in the ninth position with 33.41.

2018 hasn’t given them much to rejoice. Back in March, three of their players got suspended following the ball-tampering scandal. Albeit their bowling didn’t get affected, the opposition batsman got the measure of the likes of Aussie bowling lineup, consisting of the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, the speedsters, and off-break bowler Nathan Lyon.
