The game of cricket has come a long way and just like any sport, cricket too has witnessed a plethora of innovations over the years. And with the dawn of modern formats, the game has only become more interesting. The massive run chases at skyscraper like run-rates have left the batsmen with no option but to move out of their shells and try things out of the box.

Thus with the batsmen trying to improvise at every instance, it became utterly important for the bowlers to keep some trick up their sleeves and restrict their counterparts. And speaking solely about Test cricket, the dominance of batsmen has long been overshadowed by the methodological bowling.

With bowlers shouldering equal if not more responsibility as a batsman, their importance to a skipper have been many-fold. However, there have been certain instances when a bowler could not deliver when needed. In this article, we take a look at the bowlers who have worst averages in Test cricket.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali takes up the first spot in the list. Named skipper of the Ashes tour match prior to the start of the series, Moeen failed to live up to the expectation of his faithfuls. While he was a no-show with the bat, he failed miserably with the ball as well in the recently concluded Ashes that Australia won 4-0. The 30-year-old returned with terrible figures. He has taken just five wickets in the Ashes 2017 at a disappointing average of 117 each.

Legendary Kiwi bowler Bob Cunis also features in the list. The late Black Caps speedster enjoyed a short but impressive career spanning almost 8 years. However, his volatile bowling display during the country’s tour to West Indies in the early 70s puts him third in the list. Cunis returned with shattering figures as he could manage just six wickets in five matches at an extravagant average of 102.83

West Indies legend Sir Gary Sobers also had his fair share of poor luck as he features at fifth on the list. During a visit from Pakistan in the 1957-58 season for a bilateral series, one of cricket’s greatest all-rounder had an erratic display with the ball. Sobers claimed just 4 wickets in 5 matches with a flimsy average of 94.25.
