After having made his debut for Ireland against Scotland in an ODI in the year 2006, England’s white-ball and 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan has retired from international cricket with immediate effect. Having played for almost 16 years, Morgan has decided to hang up his boots with both form and fitness not being on his side. In the recently concluded three-match ODI series against the Netherlands, he registered two ducks in the first two games and sat out the final game due to a groin injury.
Morgan, who led England to their first-ever 50-over World Cup title in 2019 on home soil, had been struggling for form for quite some time now. Since that memorable World Cup final, the left-handed batter scored just 353 runs in 13 innings at an average of 32.09 with one century and one half-century in the ODIs. His record got worse in the T20 internationals as the 35-year-old batter managed to score only 180 runs in 13 innings at an average of 16.36 with no fifty since 2021.
Morgan has to be credited for the transformation that he brought into England’s white-ball setup after the embarrassment of the 2015 World Cup. The English side is one of the most dynamic and fearless cricket teams in the world right now for the brand of cricket that they play. He was appointed the captain of the ODI team ahead of the World Cup in 2015. But after failing to even qualify for the quarter-finals, Morgan and his men brought a drastic change in the side post that tournament.
He led his team to the finals of the 2016 T20 World Cup but fell just short against Carlos Brathwaite’s heroics in the summit clash. The memories of the 2019 WC victory are still fresh in everyone’s mind when he became the first English skipper to lift the elusive trophy. Talking about his T20I captaincy, Morgan remains the most successful captain with 44 victories under his belt. England’s revolution in white-ball cricket was evident when they posted 300-plus total in the ODIs with ease. They hold the record for the top-three totals in the 50-overs format of 444/3, 481/6, and 498/4.
In 248 ODIs, Morgan scored 7701 runs at an average of 39.29 with 14 centuries and 47 half-centuries with the highest score of 148. He played in 115 T20 internationals and racked up 2458 runs at an average of 28.58 with 14 half-centuries and the best score of 91 to his name. His Test career was underwhelming as he amassed just 700 runs in 16 matches at an average of 30.43 with two tons and three fifties.
