Former Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara continued his merry run with the bat in the ongoing County Championships in England. His good run of form for the Surrey camp has been ominous. With his most recent ton in the game against Essex, Sangakkara entered the elite list of players to have scored most number of centuries in consecutive innings in First Class cricket.
He hit his fifth consecutive century in First Class cricket when he scored a ton against Essex. His streak of consecutive tons had begun back in April. During the second innings of the match against Lancashire at The Oval, he had scored 136. Now, when the First Class season continued in May, he started the season on a high with an unbeaten 124 against Hampshire at the same venue.
In the next fixture for Surrey, while playing at the Lord’s against Middlesex, Kumar Sangakkara hit centuries in each innings. In the first innings, he scored 114 runs and then backed it up with 120 in the next innings. Now, with the century in the match against Essex, he has 5 consecutive tons in First Class innings. Another century in his next innings will see him equal the record for most tons in consecutive innings in FC matches.
If that happens, Kumar Sangakkara will enter the list that includes the likes of Donald Bradman, Charles Fry, and Mike Procter. All these three legends have 6 centuries to their streaks. Charles Fry was the first man to do so back in the year 1901. Sir Bradman accomplished the feat in the 1938-39 season. Mike Procter had hit six centuries in a row in the 1970-71 season.
