Mitchell Santner proved his mettle with the bat by finishing off the chase against the Rajasthan Royals with a six on the last ball. Walking into bat with eight needed from last three balls, Santner ran twos on 4th and 5th ball of the over. He lofted the last ball over the long-on when three runs were needed off the final delivery. Ben Stokes had his Déjà vu moment as he failed to defend 18 runs in the last over.
Winning with last ball sixes have become rare in the IPL as Santner recorded only the second such instance since 2013. MS Dhoni hit a six on the last ball off Axar Patel in the 2016 season which is the only instance of a player hitting a six on the ball of an IPL chase when six runs were required. As many as six instances of last ball sixes to win an IPL game were witnessed by end of the 2012 edition.
The first of the eight instances was recorded by Rohit Sharma who hit a six on the last ball with scores level against KKR’s Mashrafe Mortaza during the 2009 season. In fact, Rohit recorded three of first four instances of winning an IPL game with a six on the last ball. No other player has done this feat more than once. Rohit hit one against Murali Karthik in the 2011 season and against Daniel Christian in 2012.
Mitchell Santner is also only the 2nd player to hit a six on the last ball to win the game for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The first instance was recorded by Dwayne Bravo in the 2012 edition when they took on the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens. Bravo sent a low full-toss from Rajat Bhatia into the stands when CSK needed five runs from the last ball. Mumbai Indians players have recorded three instances while KKR players been on the receiving end on three instances; the most in respective aspects.
