When Samuel Badree bagged a hat-trick for Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Mumbai Indians in the 2017 edition of the IPL, he became the 15th player to do so in the history of the tournament. On the very same day, in the second game of the double headed, Andrew Tye of Gujarat Lions bagged a hat-trick against Rising Pune Supergiant. Both hat-tricks had contrasting fortunes though.
While the hat-trick taken by Samuel Badree was in a losing cause, Tye’s effort helped his side win the game by 4 wickets. Talking about the hat-tricks in IPL, Lakshmipathy Balaji was the first bowler to achieve the distinction in the inaugural edition of the tournament for the Chennai Superkings against the Kings XI Punjab. In the same season, Amit Mishra also bagged a hat-trick for the Delhi Daredevils and Makhaya Ntini got the three wickets in three balls for Chennai Superkings.
The first bowler in the history of the IPL to bag a hat-trick in a losing cause was Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj scalped his first hat-trick of the tournament for Kings XI Punjab in the 2009 edition of the tournament against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Till date, there have been only 4 bowlers who have scalped a hat-trick in the tournament in a losing cause.
Apart from Yuvraj and Badree, Sunil Narine and Shane Watson are the other two players to face this situation. Narine had his hat-trick for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the match against KXIP in 2013 edition. Watson’s hat-trick had come for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2014 edition of the tournament.
Yuvraj Singh has taken the hat-trick on two occasions in IPL and Amit Mishra has achieved the feat thrice.
