Match 5 of IPL 2022 between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals saw the third 200-plus score registered in this tournament as the RR batters toyed around with the SRH bowlers on a typical batting wicket at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on March 29. After being put in to bat, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler added 58 runs for the first wicket.
Even though both openers were dismissed, the duo laid a solid foundation and the others capitalized on it and scored at a brisk rate. Skipper Sanju Samson and new-recruit Devdutt Padikkal added 73 runs for the third wicket. Samson played a blistering knock of 55 runs from 27 deliveries while Padikkal scored a 29-ball 41. Shimron Hetmyer’s finishing touches at the back-end of the innings propelled the 2008 winners to a mammoth 210/6 from their 20 overs.
In reply, the Orange Army were never really in the run chase as they lost their top-order in the mandatory powerplay overs. While Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma were dismissed for single figures, senior batter Rahul Tripathi was dismissed without troubling the scorers. Hyderabad eventually went on to suffer a 61-run defeat. Even though Williamson was dismissed in a controversial manner, his team created an unwanted record in the powerplay overs, and without further ado, here’s a look at what really happened.
SRH create an unwanted record
After SRH found themselves in a spot of bother, being reduced to 14/3 in the first six overs, not only were they in a hopeless position from thereon but have now also taken the top spot in registering the lowest-ever powerplay score in IPL history. Coincidentally, the Orange Army broke the 13-year record that was set by their rivals of the evening, Rajasthan Royals, during the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League where they had been reduced to 14/2 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Cape Town.
Surprisingly, the defending champions Chennai Super Kings occupy the third, fourth, and fifth spots respectively, in the list. They were reduced to 15/2 against the Kolkata Knight Riders during a 2011 game at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Apart from that, the four-time winners were reeling at 16/1 twice, once against Delhi in 2015 at Raipur and then four years later against RCB at Chennai.
