New Zealand have managed to knock favourites England out of the T20 World Cup 2021. On Wednesday, Kane Williamson and Co. defeated the Three Lions by five wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. With four overs left in the game, the Brits were well and truly on the driver’s seat. However, the Black Caps held their nerve and got over the line with six balls to spare.

Moeen takes England to a competitive score

After being put in to bat first, England got off to a steady start, scoring 40 runs in the powerplay. Jonny Bairstow couldn’t get going as he got out to Adam Milne after scoring 13. Ish Sodhi delivered the body blow after he accounted for the scalp of Jos Buttler, who hit four fours in his 24-ball 29. From there on, Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali put on a useful stand of 63 runs for the third wicket.

Malan went on to score 41 off 30 before he fell prey to Tim Southee. Liam Livingstone scored a 10-ball 17, but James Neesham cut short his stay in the middle. Moeen, at the other end, played until the very end and stayed unbeaten on 51 off 37 with three fours and two sixes. The Brits got themselves up to 166. Southee, Sodhi, Milne and James Neesham got one wicket each for the Kiwis.

Daryl Mitchell plays a blinder

New Zealand started off poorly after Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson failed to get into double digits. Chris Woakes picked up both batters and pushed the Black Caps on the backfoot. Thereafter, Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway made sure that their team ended the powerplay at 36 for two. The duo cobbled together a partnership of 82 runs and bailed the Kiwis out of jail to some extent.

Conway was starting to look ominous, having scored 46, but Livingstone sent him packing  Soon after Livingstone also removed the dangerous Glenn Phillips. The pressure was on New Zealand as they needed 60 runs off the last five overs. Neesham scored a 10-ball 26 before Adil Rashid got rid of him. In the end, Mitchell’s unbeaten 48-ball 73 with four fours and as many sixes took his team home.
