4) New Zealand vs India, Third T20I, 2020

Despite playing to the reputation of renowned world-beaters, the Blackcaps have, historically, been one of those sides that has almost never found itself on the right side of tie-breakers. In the past 2 years, New Zealand have taken as many as 4 limited-overs matches to the super over- but couldn’t manage to win even a single one of them.

One of their most recent no-result heartbreaks came in the T20I home series against India earlier this year. Batting first, their tourists posted a strong 179-run total on board, courtesy of contributions from Rohit Sharma (65) and captain Virat Kohli (38).

Captain Kane Williamson was the lone warrior in his team’s steep run-chase of the target. The stylish right-hander accumulated 95 runs and looked well-set to guide his team home. But a clutch final-over from Mohammed Shami severely pegged back the hosts and kept them restricted to one run less from the target.

The super-over that followed saw Williamson and Martin Guptill collect 17-runs of Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. New Zealand looked intent to redeem their tie-breaker travesties and were really close to realising that dream, conceding just 8 off the first 4 balls.

But a fabulous double-whammy from Rohit Sharma over Tim Southee’s final two deliveries shattered those aspirations apart, as NZ were left reeling with an umpteenth super-over loss. India had, meanwhile, cruised away to an assailable 3-0 lead in the 5-match series.
