Brendon McCullum easily the most loved New Zealand cricketer around the world was playing his last ODI at the Seddon Park, Hamilton. It was a great chance for the team to pay the best tribute to him by winning the last match of the ODI series that was square one. Smith won the toss and invited them to bat first; opening the inning McCullum was his usual self, going about the task thrashing the Australian bowlers round the park. Gutpill also played his part and they were off to a flier. Though he got out on 47 and missed out on a half-century one last time but it was a thoroughly entertaining knock and left everyone with perfect memories.

The match went on quite well for the home team as they put up 246 on the board. It started off well for Australia with David Warner and Usman Khawaja but the New Zealand bowlers got things in their control soon and never let them off the hook. Matt Henry, Corey Anderson, Ish Sodhi, Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne they all kept picking wickets and the match was soon in their grasps.

Eventually, they won the match by 55 runs and with that the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy 2-1. During the post match press conference, Brendon McCullum said: “Of course I did [ kow that I was near 200 sixes]. Incredibly lucky to play for 14 years, meet some great blokes and make some great friends. I want to thank everyone for supporting me and making it possible. Tonight we were outstanding for 80% of the game, the way we bowled and fielded was testament to the character of the side. Sets up the Test series. It’s great to play against the australians. They play hard and uncompromising cricket … the way that Ish played, just shows how strong he us … Doug has bowled well all year for us. the crowd has been outstanding … I’ll hold these memories for the rest of my life.”
