West Indies took on Afghanistan in a dead rubber game in Group 1 at Nagpur. The West Indian captain Darren Sammy won the toss as he elected to field first. They decided to rest Chris Gayle while Afghanistan brought in Hamid Hassan and Usman Ghani.
Batting first the Afghans lost an early wicket before Mohammed Shahzad began to play his natural game. But once he got out, Afghanistan lost a flurry of wickets. However, Najibullah’s knock of 48 runs from 40 balls ensured that the Afghan bowlers had some total to defend. They scored 123/7 in their quota of 20 overs. For the West Indies, Samuel Badree was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/14 while Russell got 2 wickets.
Coming out to bat, Johnson Charles put up a good start before getting out for 22 from 15 balls. However, West Indies suffered from a collapse before Ramdin and Bravo came to the task. However, once both of them got out, the Afghan bowlers applied pressure on the West Indian innings as they went on to secure a win by just 6 runs. Both Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan took 2 wickets apiece. This was their first victory in the Super 10s of the WT20. Najibullah Zadran was declared the man of the match for his superb batting and an outstanding catch.
After the victory, even Chris Gayle who was not playing the game joined the Afghan players in their celebration and also posed for pictures with them. This was lauded by many in social media. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:
Only if Afghanistan can improve their fielding, they would soon become a truly competitive limited-overs team.. Congrats on spirited show !!

Well done #AFG!! They might have well beaten the crusaders of this year's #WT20. Almost gave a scare to England and South Africa as well.

Samuel Badree finishes a fantastic spell: 4-0-14-3. Ghani, Shahzad and Stanikzai were his victims. #WT20 #AFGvWI pic.twitter.com/JyTwr88iX8
