The Maharashtra derby turned out to be a humdinger of a contest. Earlier in the day, it was Captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss as Mumbai Indians elected to bowl first. Karn Sharma got to play his first game of the season as injured Krunal Pandya was ruled out. RPS had an unchanged playing XI from their last game.
Pune began in emphatic fashion as both the openers Ajinkya Rahane as well as youngster Rahul Tripathi batted steadily. Both combined 76 runs for the opening partnership. Once both the openers were back to the pavilion, it was Captain Steve Smith and crowd favourite MS Dhoni at the crease.
However, both failed to hang in for long as RPS failed to accelerate gears. Even Ben Stokes couldn’t get going as the onus fell on the lower order. Manoj Tiwary played an important cameo of 22(13) as Pune managed to post a competitive total of 160/6 in their quota of 20 overs.
A target of 161 at the Wankhede was by no means going to be a tough one. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with 2/29 in his quota of four overs. Karn Sharma also got a couple of wickets but was a touch expensive. Harbhajan Singh also bowled really well for his 1/20 while Mitchell Johnson too managed to get a wicket.
Mumbai Indians began well with openers Jos Buttler and Parthiv Patel up to the task from the first over. However, their wickets led Mumbai Indians to a spot of bother. Nitish Rana who has been quite consistent in the season so far was dismissed early. Karn Sharma who was promoted up the order also failed to do anything special.
It was captain leading from the front as Rohit Sharma scored his first half-century of the season. However, his efforts failed to get Mumbai Indians through as Ben Stokes bowled an impressive penultimate over conceding just 7 runs. At the end, Mumbai fell short of just 3 runs as RPS ended their six matches winning streak. Ben Stokes was also rewarded the man of the match for his splendid bowling effort.

Mumbai, you may be sitting pretty on the table, you may win the IPL but good luck taking the *Lost to Pune twice* stain off your undies

Stokes showed why a few rate him highly. If not with the bat, he can propel you to a win in other 2 disciplines.

Ben Stokes just bowled his 2nd maiden over in Twenty20 cricket. First one: vs South Africa in 2016 at Cape Town. #IPL #MIvRPS

Better to have Tripathi, PP and Narine type openers in T20 than Dhawan and Rahane.

Beautifully bowled by Bumrah! Deceives Tiwary through a slower one and gets him going to the dug-out! #IPL #MIvRPS

Bumrah gets Dhoni wicket and doesn't celebrate as if nothing happened ! I am sure something he has learnt from his victim ! #MIvRPS #IPL10

Ben Stokes only contribution in this IPL is dancing for " Jio Tan Tana Tan Tan Tan " and RPS paid him 14.5cr rupees for that..
— Sarcastic Dude (@Sarcasticdudee) April 24, 2017
Must say that Jasprit Bumrah has developed by leaps and bounds as a limited-overs bowler, since his India debut last year.
