The match between Chittagong Vikings and Khulna Titans at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium turned out to be a cliffhanger. After the 40 overs, the match was tied and this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) saw its first super-over. In the end, it was Rahim’s Vikings who won the super-over. Robbie Frylinck was needed to defend 12 runs and the South African did his job with sheer expertise.

Malan guides the Titans

The Vikings won the toss, elected to field first and restricted the Titans to 151 for six. The Titans got off to a breezy start as their openers Paul Stirling and Junaid Siddique put on 31 runs from 15 balls. Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan got rid of the Irishman after he scored 18 runs from 10 balls. Three overs later, seamer Robbie Frylikck accounted for the wicket of Siddique, who notched 20 with two fours and a six.

Thereafter, Dawid Malan and skipper Mahmudullah stitched together a well-compiled partnership of 77 runs off 64 balls. Speedster Abu Jayed broke the stand, dismissing Malan in the 17th over. The hulk-like Carlos Brathwaite found the boundary a couple of times, but left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam dismissed him. The captain scored 33 from 31 balls with four boundaries and he became Islam’s second victim.

An absolute humdinger

Chittagong lost Mohammad Shahzad to pacer Junaid Khan to start their run-chase. Cameron Delport and Yasir Ali injected momentum into the innings and added 39 runs in 27 balls. Left-arm tweaker Taijul Islam got rid of Delport, who racked up 17 from 16 balls. Nevertheless, Ali carried on and scored 41 runs from 34 balls with two fours and as many sixes. Speedster Shoriful Islam dismissed him in the 13th over.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim made the scoreboard tick with 34 runs from 26 balls. In the last two over, the Vikings needed 23 runs and Junaid conceded only four runs. With 19 runs required off the last over, Nayeem Hasan and Robbie Frylinck smacked three sixes to take the match to the super over. The Vikings scored 11 runs, which the Titans failed to chase down and lost their fourth consecutive encounter.
