India and Afghanistan crossed swords in the inconsequential third T20I on Wednesday, January 17, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

For the first time in the series, India batted first after Rohit Sharma won the toss. Both teams made three changes to give opportunities to the players on the bench. The Afghans had a terrific start to the contest as they reduced India to 22/4 inside the first five overs.

They would have been confident of their chances of not returning home empty-handed. However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh had other ideas. The duo stitched a memorale 190-run unbeaten partnership of 95 balls that set the stadium ablaze.

The experienced Mumbai batter, who failed to get off the mark in the first two games, remained not out on 121 off 69 balls, hitting 11 fours and eight sixes. Rinku also supported his skipper nicely by playing a fluent knock of 69 not out off 39 balls. The southpaw hit two fours and six sixes in his enterprising innings. A whopping 151 runs were scored off the last 10 overs, as the hosts finished on 212/4 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Afghanistan openers batted gallantly and got the team to 93 in the 11th over. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was unsurprisingly the more aggressive batter in the partnership but his knock of 50 off 32 balls ended when he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, courtesy a stunning catch from Washington Sundar. Afghan skipper Ibrahim Zadran also departed in quick succession for a 41-ball 50.

The onus was on the big-hitters to capitalise on the platform given by the openes. Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi formed a brilliant 56-run partnership off just 22 balls before the latter departed for a 16-ball 34. Naib hit some huge hits during his unbeaten innings of 55 off 23 balls. In the last over, Afghans needed 19 for a win as Mukesh Kumar came up to bowl. The equation came down to three runs required off the last ball and the away side could only get a couple.

The game moved to the Super Over. Mukesh bowled for India and conceded 16 runs. Azmatullah Omarzai was entrusted with the duty of bowling the Super Over for Afghanistan. Rohit hit a couple of sixes but it wasn't enough to take India over the line. With two runs required off the last ball, Yashasvi Jaiswal could only manage a single as the game rolled into another Super Over.

The second Super Over saw Rohit starting with a four and a six. However, two wickets fell off the following three deliveries as India finished with 11 runs. Afghanistan lost wickets of Nabi and Gurbaz off the first and third deliveres as Ravi Bishnoi bowled India to a memorable win. With this victory, India whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 in the series.
