India and Bangladesh locked horns in the 35th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Adelaide Oval. The game started with Bangladesh winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Indian fans have fond memories from the last time India and Bangladesh met at a T20 World Cup, where MS Dhoni’s brilliance helped India defeat the Bangla Tigers on the final delivery. The Men in Blue looked to pull off a similar heroic in order to make their way into the semi-final.
India, while batting first, got off to a sluggish start. Openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul struggled to get going, and Hasan Mahmud added to their misery by dismissing the Indian skipper for a poor score of 2(8). KL Rahul, who hadn’t been in the best of form recently, stepped up to India’s rescue and kept hitting the ball for boundaries at regular intervals. He shared a 67-run partnership with Kohli and dominated a major chunk of it.
Rahul claimed his half-century before walking off the field when Bangladesh skipper Shakib al Hasan picked up his first in the game. Suryakumar Yadav, who had been in great form of late, joined Kohli on the field, and fans expected another high-class performance from the duo. Yadav started off well and kept the scoreboard ticking alongside Kohli but fell prey to Shakib’s spin.
Hardik Pandya failed to fire too and was dismissed shortly as he entered as Hasan Mahmud added a second wicket under his belt. Dinesh Karthik joined Kohli for the final few overs, which is his comfort zone given his role as a finisher. Just when he got going, a terrible confusion between the two led to Karthik’s runout. Axar Patel also failed to impress and India’s middle-order unit came crashing down quickly.
Amidst all the wickets, Kohli kept his calm, brought up a composed half-century, remained unbeaten till the end, and notched up 64*(44). Ravichandran Ashwin was a brilliant aid toward the end as he hit a humongous six and a brilliant four in the final over. Bangladesh bowlers were punished badly, especially Shoriful Islam who ended up conceding 57 runs in his four overs spell. Thanks to Kohli’s unbeaten knock and Ashwin’s cameo of 6-ball 13*, India finished comfortably scoring 184/6.
