Barbados Royals, on Saturday, September 11, became the first team to be knocked out of the 2021 CPL. The team, led by Jason Holder, lost to the Saint Lucia Kings by 14 runs- DLS Method. Meanwhile, the Kings kept their hopes alive in the tournament after back-to-back losses.

Faf du Plessis plays a blinder

After being put in to bat first, the Warriors amassed 175 in 20 overs. Mohammad Amir got rid of Andre Fletcher and Mark Deyal in quick succession after which Joshua Bishop accounted for Roston Chase’s wicket. From there on, Faf du Plessis came to the party for the Kings.

The right-hander notched 84 runs off 54 balls with five fours and four sixes. He got the apt support from Tim David, who made a 23-ball 34. Keemo Paul’s timely 11-ball 22 propelled the Kings to a competitive score. The Royals’ bowlers leaked way too many runs at the death.

David Wiese decimates the Royals

In the run-chase, the Royals lost Kyle Mayers early, but Johnson Charles and Shai Hope steadied the ship with scores in the 30s. However, David Wiese stepped up and spoiled the party for the Royals. The veteran fast bowler picked up five wickets and gave away 25 runs in four overs.

The fast bowler ran through the Royals’ batting lineup without much fuss. Jason Holder and Hayden Walsh Jr scored 34 and 30 respectively, but their efforts went in vain. The game was reduced to 19 overs per side after rain interrupted play during the end of the Royals’ run-chase.

It is awesome to be out here: David Wiese

After the win, du Plessis updated on his leg injury and lauded the team for stepping up in the critical stage of the tournament. Wiese, on the other hand, was delighted to be performing and talked about his tactics to get the batters out.

“Difficult to say with these things, probably have to go for a scan (issue with his leg). Not looking too good for tomorrow. Great win. The toss was massive. To get to 170 or so on a wicket like that was a very good score. Three wickets in one over was pretty much game done. He’s very experienced with his tricks with the ball (Wiese). Counting on NRR and stuff like that,” Du Plessis said.

“Sometimes it just works for you. Luckily it went to the fielders today and the pitch helped my type of bowling. There was a bit of variable bounce and I used my height and cross-seam deliveries. The rain wet the wicket and it gripped more because of that. It is awesome to be out here and glad to contribute to the team,” Wiese said.

Here’s how the netizens reacted to the Kings’ victory
