Jamaica Tallawahs, led by Rovman Powell, have found their rhythm back in the ongoing edition of the CPL. In their previous game, they beat the Saint Lucia Kings by 55 runs at the Warner Park in St Kitts. They also moved up to third in the table with the Kings slipping to fourth.

Lewis blasts away the Kings

After electing to bat first, the Tallawahs got off to a flying start as Kennar Lewis and Kirk McKenzie stitched together a 55-run stand off a mere 22 balls. Roston Chase broke the stand, getting rid of McKenzie, who scored 16. However, Lewis carried on and played his shots.

Lewis smashed a 24-ball 56 with five fours and as many sixes before Kadeem Alleyne dismissed him. Thereafter, Shamarh Brooks, Powell, Andre Russell and Imad Wasim scored in the 20s and 30s to make sure that the Tallawahs posted a humongous total of 211 in 20 overs.

In the run-chase, the Kings could never get going and ended with 156 in 18.1 overs. Andre Fletcher’s brisk 13-ball 30 took the team off to a flying start. Mark Deyal and Chase scored 33 and 30 respectively, but both couldn’t carry on. Samit Patel and Faf du Plessis failed.

The lower order batters couldn’t contribute much. For the Tallawahs, Wasim was the standout performer as he picked up three wickets. Russell and Carlos Brathwaite lent him the apt support, having picked up two crucial wickets each in the middle overs.

The guys set it up well in the powerplay: Rovman Powell

Du Plessis, the Kings’ skipper, admitted that his team’s bowlers strained to hit the right channels with the ball in hand. He also rued the dropped chances in the outfield. Powell, on the other hand, was happy, but reckoned that it will be tough for his team to fill the void left by Wasim.

“We didn’t start well. There was some incredible hitting but we didn’t hit our lengths. When someone gets 200 plus, it was always going to be tough. Good cricketing wicket though. Lot of catches being dropped surprises me and it I guess boils down to skills. Some of the catches should have been taken. Disappointed that we lost by so many runs,” Du Plessis was quoted as saying.

“The guys set it up well in the powerplay. It was a pretty good game from the guys. I think we find a little loophole in the Kings in the powerplay and in the backend. Imad will leave a big void and don’t think we can fill that. But we still have good guys on the bench,” Powell said.
