Earlier in the game, the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start with their openers, Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav, adding 91 runs for the first wicket. The partnership was broken in the 10th over by Andre Russell, who dismissed Evin Lewis on 43 (28). A couple of overs later, Rohit Sharma (11) was also sent packing by Sunil Narine.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who has been in sensational form this season, reached yet another fifty this season. He was dismissed on 59 that came off just 39 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Andre Russell was the man who got the breakthrough for KKR. After Suryakumar’s dismissal, the innings suddenly lost the momentum. Eventually, it was Hardik Pandya who managed to get the final flourish for the hosts.

Hardik scored an unbeaten 35 off 20 deliveries to take the MI total to 181/4 in the stipulated 20 overs. In the run chase, the KKR camp sprung a surprise by letting Shubman Gill open with Chris Lynn. The move did not work and both openers perished cheaply. Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana played decently well to hold the run chase in proper shape. While Rana scored 31 off 27 balls, Robin Uthappa hammered a quick 54 off just 35 deliveries.

Uthappa was dropped earlier in the innings by Mayank Markande. Luckily for Mumbai Indians, the drop did not cost them dearly. The dismissals of Uthappa and Rana in quick succession hurt the run chase. Eventually, it boiled down to KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik to rally the run chase. Karthik remained unbeaten on 36 off 26 deliveries as KKR finished with 168/6 in their 20 overs to lose by 13 runs.
