Australia registered a commanding 85 runs win to hand Sri Lanka their biggest T20 victory and gain a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series. Riding on Glenn Maxwell’s blitzkrieg, the visitors put out a thoroughly dominating performance posting a mammoth 263/3 batting first at the Pallekelle International Stadium. Sri Lanka, in reply, were given no chance by the Aussie bowlers and could manage only 178/9 in 20 overs.

The first innings was all about Glenn ‘The Big Show’ Maxwell. The right-hander was at his brutal best and smothered the Sri Lankan bowling attack mercilessly. Normally used as a pinch hitter in the middle order, it was surprising to see him open the batting.

But, Warner’s move to open with him proved to be worth millions for the Australians tonight as the Maxi blasted his way to an unbeaten 145 runs knock coming off just 65 balls, pasting 14 fours and 9 sixes during his mammoth knock.

The aftermath of his knock was that Australia crushed Sri Lanka’s long-standing record for the highest team total by a team in T20Is. It was a dizzying knock (at least for the Sri Lankan bowlers) from Maxwell who was dropped from the ODIs due to poor form.

But, there can be no better to announce your comeback to the side better than how Maxwell did today. It was a quiet start for him as he played off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake with cautiously in the opening over of the match. But, that was it, that opening over was the only over when his bat remained silent.

He began flexing his arms with a powerful boundary off Lakmal in the next over and went on and on his to destroy Sri Lanka completely. Warner, too, playing in his natural fashion straight away afterwards, smashing a quadruple of fours in the following over by Kasun Rajitha.

Both began to clear the boundary cleanly and cracked 57 for the first wicket before the stand was broken by Senanayake. But, there was no respite at all. Maxwell combined with Usman Khawaja (97 runs stand for the 2nd wicket) and then Travis Head (109 runs stand for the third wicket) to lead a full – charged assault on the Lankans and help his team eventually break the record for the record or the highest individual team total in T20Is.

Sri Lanka’s innings description can be short. They did try their best the target was always going to be beyond their reach, especially after no one except Dinesh Chandimal and Chamara Kapugedara could stand at the crease to make any significant impact.

After a poor start, where they lost Dilshan and Perera cheaply, Chandimal took responsibility to adding run to the scoreboard before he departed for 58. Later, Kapugedara played a similar knock, hitting 43 off just 23 balls to keep the Sri Lankans fans interested in the game despite a highly unlikely chance of winning the game.
