After 10 wonderful years of entertainment, drama, and glory, the Indian Premier League (IPL) enters its second decade and it begins today at the auction. As the teams gear up to materialize all their plans as far as the squad building is concerned, this is a place where one has to expect the unexpected. A team has to be completely ready to take crucial decisions on the spot as nothing here can be predicted.
23 days ago, all the franchises announced the players who will not get into the auction and stay an integral part of their squad. Whilst the Royal Challengers Bangalore have gone in with Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Sarfaraz Khan, the Sunrisers Hyderabad retained their two indispensable members in Bhuvneshwar Kumar and David Warner. The returning warriors Rajasthan Royals retained the Australian skipper Steve Smith.
One of the most successful units in the IPL history, Chennai Super Kings have retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja, whilst the three-time champions Mumbai Indians retained Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya. There were a lot of surprising choices made by franchises as some humongous names in Chris Gayle, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir, and Ravichandran Ashwin were sent back to the auction table.
English players set to dominate
Unlike all the other auctions, this time around, a bunch of English superstars have enrolled themselves. English Test skipper Joe Root, limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and of course, the big man Ben Stokes. Things will only get complicated for all the franchises when these names will pop-up as all of them are match winners in their own way and will induce a huge bidding war.
Many are touting the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Ravichandran Ashwin to be the two biggest picks amongst all the Indians. Barring them, Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan have done tremendously well in the IPL previously and they will be fetching a brilliant contract as well. Whilst the focus has remained completely on the marquee players’ list, there are a lot of other players over the next two days who will surprise not just the franchises and the auctioneers, but the fans as well.
