After a couple of drab days, the 2018 U19 Asia Cup in Bangladesh was a witness to a couple of exciting encounters between Pakistan and Bangladesh, and Afghanistan and Nepal. Moreover, India and Afghanistan have already qualified for the semi-final. On the other hand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the home team tomorrow will get a final shot of progressing to the next round.

Match 7

Pakistan U19 vs Bangladesh U19 Group B

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first, but Pakistan got off to a steady start having scored 73/1 in 22 overs. However, thereafter, Rohail Nazar’s team lost nine wickets for 114 runs and were bundled out for 187 runs in the 46th over despite Waqar Ahmed’s knock of 67 runs. Leg-break bowler Rishad Hossain was the Tigers’ standout bowler as he picked up three wickets.

Towhid Hridoy’s team lost wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 42/3 in the 11th over. Nevertheless, Shamim Hossain and Prantik Nawroz Nabil notched half-centuries to guide their side. Both stitched together a stand of 97 runs to push the Pakistani bowlers on the backfoot. The Tigers huffed and puffed and chased the target down in the 48th over with 16 deliveries to spare.

Match 8

Afghanistan U19 vs Nepal U19 Group A

Nepal won the toss and elected to bat first and the decision backfired miserably as they were shot out for a modest 131 in the 39th over. Pawan Saraf and Aasif Sheikh put on a 53-run stand, but it was the only significant contribution from the Nepalese team. Fast bowler Azmatullah Omarzai picked up four wickets in his nine-over spell to rip the heart out of the opponents’ batting lineup.

Afghanistan lost the early wicket of Riaz Hussain to fast-bowler Rashid Khan and a partnership of 45 runs between the skipper and Ijaz bailed them out somewhat. Left-arm spinner Surya Tamang nipped out four wickets thereafter to keep Nepal in contention for a victory. In the end, Arif Khan and Abdul Rahman built a 21-run stand to take the Afghans home.

Nepal U19: 131 all out in 38.3 overs; (Rohit Paudel 46, Rashid Khan 30; Azmatullah Omarzai 4/14, Abdul Rahman 2/21)
