India’s limited-overs domestic tournament Vijay Hazare Trophy began today with as many as 12 matches were played on the day. Three matches each from the Elite Group A, B, C and Plate Group wee played. A couple of them were washed out with incessant rains in Chennai and while most of the other matches were one-sided, the fans also witnessed a low-scoring thriller between Andhra and Kerala.

The match was played in Delhi with Andhra winning the toss and opting to bat first. They couldn’t come to the terms of the conditions and managed to post only 190 runs before getting bowled out in 49 overs. Bodapati Sumanth batted well for them to score 79 runs. One would’ve hoped for Kerala to gun down the total with ease but Andhra’s bowlers had other ideas. They kept on picking wickets at the regular intervals and even the likes of Sanju Samson and Sachin Baby couldn’t win the game for the team.

They were bundled out for 183 and eventually fell only seven runs short of the target and started the tournament with a loss.

Shaw and Rahane shine for Mumbai

In a group A encounter, Baroda faced Mumbai in Alur and the latter side just rolled over the opponents with utter ease. After opting to bat first, Krunal Pandya’s 85 runs helped the reach a below-par total of 238 runs. He didn’t get enough support from the other end and despite Yusuf Pathan’s blistering knock, they couldn’t post a daunting total. In response, Mumbai were clinical in their chase. The opening duo of Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane started superbly by adding 137 runs in less than 20 overs.

Shaw was special as he scored 98 runs off just 66 deliveries with 12 fours and five maximums. Rahane, the skipper, led from the front with a good unbeaten knock of 79 runs off 116 balls. Shreyas Iyer also scored a half-century batting at three and remained not out on 56 off 67 balls as Mumbai gunned down the total comfortably in the 42nd over.
