Rohit Sharma replaced Virat Kohli as the skipper of the Indian side in ODI cricket ahead of India’s tour to South Africa. Kohli is now no longer the captain of the Indian team in any of the limited-overs formats, with him also stepping down as the captain of the ‘Men in Blue’ in T20I cricket earlier this year.

And, Saba Karim, the former Indian cricketer feels that Kohli has been sacked from his position as ODI skipper. Karim further reasoned that the 33-year-old Kohli himself made the announcement that he was stepping down as the captain of the Indian side in T20I cricket, but wanted to remain as the ODI captain. Karim also feels that the inability to win an ICC Trophy might have been the reason why Kohli was removed as the ODI captain.

“It is right to say that Kohli has been sacked. He made the announcement while leaving the T20I captaincy and could have confirmed that he does not want to continue as ODI captain as well. This meant he wanted to remain ODI captain. Not being able to win an ICC trophy could have cost Virat Kohli the ODI captaincy,” said Saba Karim on a show called Khelneeti.

I am confident that Rahul Dravid would have had a word with Kohli: Saba Karim

Saba Karim also feels that Indian head coach Rahul Dravid or any official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would have spoken to Kohli regarding split captaincy. Karim concluded by stating that Dravid is a person who always wants to have clear communication with his players.

“I am confident that Rahul Dravid or someone from the BCCI would have had a word with Virat Kohli regarding their plans of introducing split captaincy. Dravid has often put emphasis on having clear communication with players. So, when it comes to taking such a big decision, I believe someone would have surely talked to Kohli,” concluded Karim.
