Watch: AB de Villiers murders the Indian attack at Kanpur: South Africa’s innings was stuck in second gear for the majority of the 1^st ODI in Kanpur before AB de Villiers decided to take it upon his shoulders and played a dazzling innings to take South Africa to 303. By all accounts it looked an improbable total when Amla and Du Plessis were going pretty slow before the 30^th over.

AB de Villiers, who got one of the loudest receptions from the crowd, was still in the middle come the final overs, and those sixes and fours were always going to come raining in weren’t they. Though AB was not to his usual utter devastating best but still mighty effective. The fact that despite not being in the best of touch he was able to score a 73 ball ton which included 5 fours and six majestic sixes, shows his sheer class. AB was being criticized for gifting his wicket in the T20Is but kept a cool head when he first came in.

It wasn’t the most easiest of wickets and ball was not coming on to the bat. Amla and du Plessis had stitched a good stand but the run rate was below par. AB brought with him some much-needed urgency as he started to rotate the strike well along with David Miller. The superman just went berserk in the final overs and got to his century off the final ball of the innings with a ridiculous six.

This AB innings had all the ingredients to inspire Bollywood scripts. The first half saw a mellow, hard-worker who rotated the strike and did everything right, like a studious child. And in the second half he murdered the Indian attack with some scintillating stroke play. He got a standing ovation from the crowd which was great to see particularly after what happened at Cuttack.
