Watch: Ben Stokes gets out obstructing the field: Ben Stokes became only the sixth batsman, and first England player, to be given out obstructing the field in a one-day international during the 2nd ODI against Australia at Lord’s. The incident occurred during 26th over of England’s innings when Stokes reacted to Mitchell Starc’s throw at the stumps in follow-through by putting his glove against the ball to escape from the throw.
Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade was the most vocal during the appeal which was then supported by Captain Steven Smith. As a result, the on-field umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and Tim Robinson had to take the assistance of the third umpire, Joel Wilson to make a decision which he viewed in slow motion and decided to give it out for obstructing the field.
As a result, Ben Stokes became the 2nd England player in International Cricket to be given out obstructing the field. Len Hutton was the other England player to be given out obstructing the field and it came in a Test match. Interestingly, Hutton was the only player to be dismissed in that way in Test Cricket.
Following Stokes’ dismissal, Lord’s responded with chorus of boos and England captain Eoin Morgan was clearly unhappy with the decision while the England balcony looked on amazed.
