Often referred to as ‘Steyn Gun’, enough to indicate his speed, Dale Steyn is one of the all-time great fast bowlers. He generates the kind of excitement and drama that makes fast bowling a sight to behold. An ability to bowl consistently at 140 kmph and above, a lethal out-swinger, a sharp bouncer and an ability to surprise the batsmen with a ball that nips in make him a complete fast bowler.
In a thrilling ODI match against New Zealand, South Africa was defending 22 off 13 balls in the final stages. With 2 wickets in hand and two batsmen reasonably set, the game was not beyond the reach of the Kiwis. Steyn running in to bowl the last ball of the overlooked determined to make an impact and he did so with some style.
Bowling a cross-seamed delivery on off-stump on a fuller length, he not only cleaned up the batsman but also broke the off-stump. The batsman, Mitchell McClenaghan, attempted an adventurous shot by making room to try and drive over cover but missed the ball completely.
Steyn didn’t show much emotion, picked up the stump and threw it aside. The ball was bowled at 141.9 kmph and was superbly bowled. South Africa having posted 305, won the match by 20 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series. Steyn picked up two wickets in this high scoring encounter. A master of his art, Dale Steyn has been a loyal servant of South African cricket. He has bowled many match-winning spells in his illustrious career for the Proteas.
