Watch: Hashim Amla shows great sportsman spirit against India in the Nagpur Test: South Africa were in trouble and once they lost 2 wickets with that of the nightwatchman Imran Tahir towards the end of day 1, South African captain Hashim Amla walked out. Amla has been completely out of sorts in the series and for his team to change the outcome of the series they needed him to take the lead. But nothing like that happened and he was dismissed for 1 by Ravichandran Ashwin, once he edged it and Ajinkya Rahane grabbed it at slips Amla did not wait for the umpires decision rather chose to walk off.
A sportsmanship gesture we rarely see these days in modern day cricket where the players rather choose to wait till the umpire gives it out and even if they know it is; stay if the umpire doesn’t give it out.
The dismissal was of the first ball of Ashwin’s over. It was good length delivery outside off stump, but Amla attempted to sweep it and was a little early in his shot. The ball hit his arm and then hit the back of the bat near the bottom end and jumped up. It bounced off Saha’s shoulder and popped up high as Rahane took a simple catch at first slip. A dejected looking Amla quickly turned back and began walking towards the dressing room.
