Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath is known for his classical left-arm spin bowling. Though, his fielding hardly makes headlines in international cricket, a catch that he took in Australia deservedly received a stand ovation at The Gabba in Brisbane. The 1st final of the Commonwealth Bank Series between the home team and Sri Lanka witnessed one of the greatest boundary catches ever taken.
Openers David Warner and Matthew Wade had given Australia a rollicking start having added 136 runs in 23.5 overs. Sri Lanka needed an inspiration from somewhere to make the inroads into the powerful batting lineup of the opposition and they received it from the veteran spinner. The last ball of the 24th over produced an outstanding catch by Herath. Wade, facing seamer Nuwan Kulasekara, seemed to have struck the ball cleanly enough to sail over the ropes but it wasn’t timed as well as initially thought.
Herath was at long-on and Wade had enough on it to get it past him as he was standing a few yards inside the ropes, the Sri Lankan though, kept his eyes on the ball throughout, backpedalled a few steps, stuck out one hand and snapped it while falling back. He made sure he caught it clean with his feet well inside the ropes. The stunning effort thus ended a superb opening stand between the Aussie openers. Australia went on to post 321/6 in 50 overs and in reply the islanders fell short by just 15 runs. The thrilling contest witnessed many exciting moments with Herath’s catch being one of the most talked about ones.
