It was the third Test between Australia and Pakistan in 1999. The venue was Perth, the fastest wicket to play on in the world. Here in this over, the young Shoaib Akhtar is seen struggling very hard to finish his over. It took him four balls to actually mark the beginning of the over as all of his previous balls were no balls.
Akhtar started with banging the ball hard at short length with a grunting sound. Ponting had no problem in ducking under it as the ball went past harmlessly over the batsman’s head. However, it was judged as a no ball for its height. The second ball also turned out to be a no-ball outside the off stump which Ponting left alone. The third delivery was at the driving length and Ponting played it on the front foot, but Akhtar oversteps the line.
Akhtar checked the line and marked his run up again. He ran in and once again bowled a no ball. Wasim Akram rushes towards Akhtar and talked with him and asked him to relax and take his time.
Finally, Akhtar managed to bowl the first legal ball. The next ball was fuller and was hit for a four in the mid off region. Akhtar was surely carried away by the pace and bounce as the next delivery was also a bouncer which was left alone by Ponting. The next was targeted on the hips and Ponting didn’t manage to hit it.
There a chance of a catch for the short leg fielder but he fell short. The fifth ball was defended on the rise. The last ball was short which was hit with a cross bat for a boundary. The long and lengthy over finally came to an end.
