The Delhiites witnessed those trademark wristy cover drives from the Indian skipper, as Virat Kohli played a vital knock of 44 runs and shared 79 runs for the 4th wicket with Ajinkya Rahane.
Captaining the first Test at his home ground Kohli skipped back and pulled South African pacer Kyle Abbott and used his feet swiftly against off-spinner Dane Piedt. He beautifully tucked Morkel’s short one’s to his credit while going gently to the nagging line at times.
It was the 47th over of the day’s play when Kohli swept a middle and leg delivery from Piedt to the leg side. The ball had four runs written over it, but Bavuma, standing at short leg couldn’t get out of the way, as the ball hit his thigh and leaped in the air. Wicketkeeper Vilas was quick to react, moved quickly from behind the stumps and dived forward on the pitch to grab it.
He was back to the hut, after stroking seven boundaries, with India in a spot of bother at 136/4. The visitors did well to pick up seven wickets on the first day’s play. Ajinkya Rahane steadied the Indian ship with a brilliant 89 and stayed unbeaten overnight. Dane Piedt picked up 4 vital wickets while Kyle Abbott scalped 3.
It was one of those rare wickets where the batsman plays a good shot and has his luck to blame as the ball hit the fielder and bounced high enough to give the wicketkeeper a chance to grab it.
