Earlier this month, the three-match ODI series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was agreed upon. All the games will be hosted by the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka with the first encounter set to be played on Sunday, May 23.

The teams would be geared up after playing their respective practice matches. Both teams have tended to underperform at the highest level. There’s turmoil in the Lankan camp, surrounding the signing of central contracts.

The Tigers, on the other hand, had a winless tour of New Zealand and then lost the second Test against the Lankans in Pallekele last month. However, they would be relieved for the fact that Shakib Al Hasan and pacer Mustafizur Rahman are back for them after their stints in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL).

There’s a hint of worry in the Bangladesh camp as Khaled Mahmud Sujon, who was given the responsibility of the ‘team leader’ for the tour, has tested positive for COVID-19.

The veteran didn’t join the bio-secure bubble of the national team. As far as the game is concerned, the pitch, traditionally, has assisted the slower bowlers and a pretty low-scoring game seems to be in store on Sunday.

Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan will bat at number three, confirmed skipper Tamim Iqbal. The veteran wasn’t a part of the New Zealand tour due to parental duties but is fresh from playing in the 2021 IPL. Earlier this year, he performed, both with bat and ball during Bangladesh’s home ODI series against West Indies.

Tamim also confirmed that Mushfiqur Rahim will don the keeping gloves. Liton Das had horrendous outings against the Black Caps and he will be looking to make amends. Taskin Ahmed looked sharp in the Test series last month and he will be keen to replicate a similar show in the 50-overs format as well.

Predicted XI

Tamim Iqbal (C), Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat/Mahedi Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Bench: Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mohammad Mithun, Shoriful Islam, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat/Mahedi Hasan

Sri Lanka

Kusal Perera has a massive task at hand after being appointed as Sri Lanka’s skipper. The southpaw took over the reins from Dimuth Karunaratne. Danushka Gunathilaka was in excellent form in the West Indies and he will want to continue with his form. The onus will also be on vice-captain Kusal Mendis.

Wanindu Hasaranga has been effective in the T20 format, but he has strained a wee bit in the other two formats. With two fifties to his name, he is no mug with the bat either. He is likely to be partnered by Akila Dananjaya and with conditions assisting the spinners, Lakshan Sandakan may also get a go.

Predicted XI

Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera (C and WK), Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Dananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando/Lakshan Sandakan

Bench: Ramesh Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, Ashen Bandara, Asitha Fernando/Lakshan Sandakan, Chamika Karunaratne, Shiran Fernando, Binura Fernando
