It was a doubleheader on the fifth day of the Women’s World T20 2018. Pakistan registered a much-needed win on this day, their first in the game against Ireland. However, with Australia and India dominating in their group, it will be tough for Pakistan to make it into the knockout and will have to depend on the results of the other games.

In the other encounter, Australia Women were up against New Zealand Women. It was a crucial encounter for the Kiwis as a loss here could potentially invalidate their chances of making it to the knockouts of the tournament. However, they failed to pull off a win and thus are in a similar situation as Pakistan.

Pakistan Women vs Ireland Women (Group B) – Match 9

Pakistan women produced a strong performance in this match to bring their World T20 campaign back on track. After having opted to bat first, skipper Javeria Khan took the onus upon herself to give Ireland a solid fight. Her unbeaten 74 which came off 52 deliveries helped her team to get to 139/6 in 20 overs. Lucy O’Reilly picked up three wickets with the ball.

Ireland was briefly interested in the chase when Shillington and Isobel Joyce were hitting boundaries early on in the innings and looked good. However, once Nashra Sandhu picked the wicket of the former, rest of the Irish batsmen capitulated. Sandhu went on to register figures of 2/8 in her four overs as Ireland fell short of the target by 38 runs.

Brief Scores

PAK-W: 139/6 in 20 overs (Javeria Khan 74*, Ayesha Zafar 21, Lucy O’Reilly 3/19)

IRE-W: 101/9 in 20 overs (Isobel Joyce 30, Shillington 27, Nashra Sandhu 2/8)

Result: Pakistan Women won by 38 runs.

Australia Women vs New Zealand Women (Group B) – Match 10

The pitch at the Providence Stadium in Guyana is true to the stroke-makers and hence Australia opted to bat first after winning the toss. The openers added 71 runs laying a firm platform from where the middle-order could take over. Alyssa Healy played a top-notch inning of 53 off 38 balls recording her third consecutive fifty. However, the White Ferns pulled things back slightly in the last 10 overs as the Aussies put up 153 runs on the board.

The chase started off with five wides for New Zealand. However, the side lost three wickets in the first three overs. It wasn’t going to be easy for them to recover from this stage. Although Suzie Bates tried hard, it was just too much of an ask for her. She fell for 48 runs and ultimately New Zealand were bowled out for 120 runs conceding a 33-run victory to the Aussies.

Brief Scores:

AUS-W: 153/7 in 20 overs (Alyssa Healy 53, Rachael Haynes 29*, Kasperek 3/25)

NZ-W: 120/10 in 17.3 overs (Suzie Bates 48, Katey Marin 24, Megan Schutt 3/12)

Result: Australia Women won by 33 runs.
