World T20 2016 Final: England v West Indies – Statistical Highlights

West Indies won the World T20 title for the 2nd time after defeating England in the finals in a dramatic way after Carlos Brathwaite hit 4 consecutive sixes in the final over when they needed 19 runs. Chasing 156, West Indies lost early wickets but the star of the 2012 final Marlon Samuels led his side in the chase. He fought it alone from at one other end until Brathwaite took the game away from England. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the game.

1 – West Indies became the first team to win the World T20 title twice. They were the first team to win the title twice.

1 – West Indies became the first country to witness their Men’s team, Women’s team and U19 teams winning World Cups in the same year. Australia missed out the record as their Men’s team lost in finals of WT20 in 2010.

2 – Number of Player of the tournament awards Virat Kohli now has received in World T20s. He won the award in 2014 as well. He now became the first player to win Player of the tournament award more than once in ICC events including the Champions trophy.

2 – Number of Man of the match awards Marlon Samuels has received in World T20 finals. He won the award in 2012 against Sri Lanka as well. He now became the first player to win 2 match awards in finals of World Cups. Considering Champions trophy, Shane Watson is only the other player to receive two Man of the match awards in ICC event finals. Watson received both in Champions Trophy finals.

3 – Number of times West Indies has appeared in the final across all tournaments in all formats at Eden Gardens before this game. On all the 3 occasions, West Indies ended on losing side. Interestingly, on all the 3 times they won the toss as well.

3 – Joe Root became only the 3rd player to pick up a wicket in WT20 final after scoring a fifty. Shahid Afridi in 2009 and Marlon Samuels in 2012 are the other two.

4 – Number of times Virat Kohli has won Man of the series awards in T20Is, the most by any player. Shahid Afridi stands next in this list with 3 such awards.

5 – Carlos Braithwaite became the 5th batsman to hit 4 consecutive sixes in a T20I.

8 – Runs scored by Darren Sammy in this WT20. These are the fewest by any captain who played a minimum of 3 innings in the tournament.

10 – Number of consecutive tosses won by Darren Sammy in T20Is, the most by any captain.

19 – Runs required for West Indies at the start of the final over. These are the most runs achieved in 20th over of a chase in a T20I.

19.70 – Percentage of team’s wickets taken by Samuel Badree over his T20I career, the best for a West Indian.

24 – Runs scored by West Indies in the final over. These are the most runs scored in the 20th over of a chase in T20Is.

50 – Chris Gayle became only the 4th West Indian player to play 50 T20Is.

66 – Runs scored by Eoin Morgan in this WT20. These are the 3rd fewest by any captain batting in top order who played a minimum of 5 innings in the tournament. The first two are also by an England captain. Paul Collingwood scored 61 and 63 runs in 2010 and 2009 editions respectively.

70 – Dot balls bowled by Samuel Badree in this WT20, the joint most by any player.

85* – Runs scored by Marlon Samuels in this game. This is the highest score in WT20 final overhauling his own record of 78 in 2012 final. His innings is the 3rd best in a knockout game in T20Is. Tillakaratne Dilshan (96*) and Virat Kohli (89*) have scored more runs in a knockout game in T20Is.

92.59 – Dwayne Bravo’s strike rate of 92.59 is the 2nd lowest in a World T20 final. Mahela Jayawardene’s 91.66 in 2012 final was the lowest. [Min: 25 runs]

163 – Runs scored by Marlon Samuels in the finals of WT20s. He is only the 2nd player after Kumar Sangakkara to score more than 100 runs in the finals. Sangakkara has 138 runs in those games.

249 – Runs scored by Joe Root in this tournament. These are the most by an England player in a single edition. Kevin Pietersen scored 248 in 2010 WT20.

298 – Wickets taken by Dwayne Bravo in Twenty20 cricket. Only Lasith Malinga with 299 has more than Bravo.

340 – Carlos Brathwaite’s strike rate of 340 is the highest in a World T20 final. [Min: 25 runs]
