Discussions around Cheteshwar Pujara and his style of batting never come to an end. One of the most dependable and solid players of the Indian team, Pujara is known for his incredible patience and knack for playing long innings, which have bailed the team out of trouble on numerous occasions. Despite being criticized for his extremely slow approach, the right-hander has shown that he pays little heed to public opinion.

In what was another exhibition of his obdurate temperament, Pujara ground out at Southampton against the New Zealand pacers in the World Test Championship final after India made a steady start with both the openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, watchfully tackling the opponent attack in the overcast Southampton conditions.

The 62-run opening stand was brought to an end courtesy of Kyle Jamieson, who got Rohit Sharma caught in the slips, while Neil Wagner struck soon as Shubman Gill nicked him behind, leaving India two down after a strong start. Coming in at three, an unfazed Pujara took as many as 36 deliveries as he drove Wagner for a boundary.

A Sri Lankan cricket fan used the opportunity to take a sly dig at India’s No. 3, as he termed Pujara getting off the mark in 36 deliveries a “tribute” to India’s horror show at Adelaide Down Under during the iconic Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. “Pujara got off the mark in the 36th delivery as a tribute to their “36 allout” in the Adelaide Test inns. #Cricket”, wrote Daniel Alexander.

Quite unsurprisingly, the snide remark did not go down well with the India and Pujara fans, who launched a barrage of mean responses.

India-New Zealand’s battle for the ultimate glory

The inaugural edition of the World Test Championship is set to end with India and New Zealand’s Southampton affair. Notably, the first day of the game was washed out due to rain and it remains likely that the clash will go into the reserve day (June 23) that has been kept by the ICC to make up for the lost time due to inclement weather, bad light or any other unavoidable reason. The WTC winner will be awarded with the ICC mace and USD 1.6 million.
