It was the brilliant partnership from swashbuckling middle order batsman Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey which ensured Kolkata Knight Riders clinched a nail-biting thriller against Delhi Daredevils and reach the top of the IPL 10. Points table. The hard-hitting man from Baroda got his lost touch and played some brilliant shots en route to his 39 balls 59 which included 6 fours and 2 hits over the fence.

His innings came on the day when his son celebrated his 3rd birthday. He wasn’t present there but his innings was the best birthday gift his son could have ever hoped for. Yusuf revealed that his son has watched only two matches of him before and had asked him for a bat and a ball which came as a surprise to Yusuf given the fact he was merely 3 years old.

“When we left from the hotel in Kolkata, he asked me for a bat and ball, which was a shock for me. He has only seen two games of mine since he really began to understand things. And after watching those two matches he has asked me for a bat and ball. I wanted to come here and win the game for the team. Today also, when we were talking on the phone, we talked about it. There can’t be a better gift then helping the team win and whatever he has asked for I will give those things to him after winning the game for my team,” Yusuf was quoted as saying to the IPL website.

It was an exceptional come from behind by Kolkata especially after being reduced to 21/3. They lost the inform Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir and the writing seemed to be on the wall from there on. But it wasn’t the end of the drama yet as Yusuf Pathan and Manish Pandey started resurrecting the innings and played some delightful shots in the process. The century partnership was crucial in KKR’s 4th win of the season.

Yusuf said that they were trying to hit at least one boundary per over irrespective of the bowler and they executed their plans to perfection. “We had a good game plan and it succeeded. We were trying to get a boundary or a six in every over regardless of who the bowler was and to keep rotating the strike. The wicket was good and the partnership was also coming along well. So we were trying to put the bowlers and the captain under pressure so that they commit a mistake and so do the fielders. We backed ourselves.

He is batting really well right now. The way I was middling the ball and the runs were coming, I was telling him ‘the runs are coming freely. You continue to rotate the strike, and if you get the ball (which is there to be hit) for a boundary or six, convert it. “Pathan also revealed some interesting aspects of his thought process as a batsman.

“The bowlers were becoming aggressive and I was enjoying that. When the bowler comes aggressively at you, I feel good because (which means) he wants to get me out and that leads to a good contest. I enjoy that contest and fighting back.”
