It is almost certain that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be hosting the mega-auction for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). BCCI had originally planned to organize the mega-auction before IPL 2021 but the ongoing coronavirus pandemic forced the Indian board to bring a change in their plans.

It is learned that BCCI is hoping to expand the T20 League by adding one or two new franchises. Thus, the mega-auction seems inevitable before the next edition. The mega-auction adds the required spice to the league as it changes the dynamics of all the franchises.

The teams have to make a tough call regarding which three players to retain as apart from three players, they have to build the entire squad from a scratch. It also means that the auction table for IPL 2022 will witness a lot of going under the hammer. The presence of decorated and match-defining players is bound to cause a bidding war on the auction table and many players are expected to become millionaires overnight.

1. David Warner

Just before the BCCI decided to suspend IPL 2021 for an indefinite time, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) sprung a surprise as they sacked David Warner as a skipper. Kane Williamson was announced as the new leader of the group while Warner was also dropped from the Playing XI. The decision was the consequence of SRH’s poor outing in IPL 2021.

SRH were languishing at the bottom of the points table with just one victory from seven league games. By dropping Warner from the playing XI, the Orange Army made it almost certain that they won’t be retaining the aggressive opening batsman and he will be up for grabs during IPL 2022 mega-auction.

There is no doubt to the fact that Warner has all the attributes of becoming the costliest buy in IPL 2022. The Australian opening batter is the highest overseas run-getter in the history of the Indian Premier League and was the fastest to breach the 5000-run mark. On his day, Warner can single-handedly take his team to victory irrespective of the opposition he is playing against and thus there will be many franchises who will be hoping to acquire the services of the batsman.
