The euphoria around the ICC T20 World Cup is starting to pick up. 2020 is supposed to be a big year for T20 cricket with two World Cups set to be staged in Australia. While the Women’s T20 World Cup will be played in February-March, the Men’s event will take place later in the year in October.

The Men’s event will be a 45-match affair, starting with eight teams across two groups- Sri Lanka, PNG, Ireland and Oman in Group A followed by Bangladesh, Netherland, Scotland, and Namibia- vying for the two spots up for grabs in the main-draw- The Super 12.

Group 1, which consists of defending champions West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia will be joined by the topper of group A and the side that finishes second in group B. Similarly, Group 02, boasting of India, South Africa, England and Afghanistan, will be joined by the team that claims the numero uno spot in Group B and the second-seed side at the end of the all the games of Group A.

The Super-12- where each side will play the other once, will be superseded by the semi-finals, followed by a summit clash at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on November 15, 2020

So, who are the favorites? Adam Gilchrist picks his semi-finalists

It has become a routine exercise now. Before the start of every ICC event, pundits and former cricketers are asked to pick their top-4 sides for the semi-finals and the eventual winner. Three-time 50-over World Cup winner, Adam Gilchrist has had his say on who he thinks will make it the semis next year.

And, he’s picked the usual suspects. According to Gilly, the usual suspects in Australia, India, New Zealand, and England to make it to the top-4 while he also cautioned against writing off Pakistan, who are currently the top-seeded nation in the world.

“Probably they (India) will be featuring in semi-finals and the finals. I can’t predict who is going to win but I suspect that the usual suspects like India, England, Australia, and New Zealand will probably make a long way, semi-finals of course,” Gilchrist said at a promotional event in Mumbai as quoted by Times Now.

“Pakistan are the number one ranked team in the format, so you cannot rule them out. But T20 cricket is a bit of lottery so it is hard to predict the winner until the final runs are scored or wickets are taken,” the champion wicketkeeper-batsman added.
