India kept the 3-match ODI series alive with a clinical 6-wicket win against Australia in the do-or-die clash at the Adelaide Oval. Australia posted a stiff total of 298/9 while batting first as Shaun Marsh struck a 123-ball 131 with 11 fours and three sixes. India kept themselves alive in the chase with some crucial partnerships. Virat Kohli anchored the chase with a 112-ball 104 before MS Dhoni finished off with an unbeaten 54-ball 55 effort.
All the major stats and numbers recorded during India’s 6-wicket win in the Adelaide ODI:
A rare captaincy record for Kohli:
2 – Virat Kohli became only the 2nd visiting captain after Faf du Plessis to win a Test, ODI and T20I in Australia. Among the home team captains, only Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have won a game in all the three formats. Ponting and Kohli are the only ones to do win a Test, ODI and T20I in a single tour in Australia.
List of records Virat Kohli created with his 104-run knock against Australia at the Adelaide Oval
Winning and losing cause tons:
4 – Virat Kohli’s century is only the 4th ODI ton for India in winning cause against Australia in the latter’s own backyard. VVS Laxman scored an unbeaten 103 in the 2004 Brisbane ODI, Sachin Tendulkar scored 117* in the 2008 Sydney ODI while Manish Pandey made 104* in the 2016 Sydney ODI.
131 – Shaun Marsh’s 131 is the highest individual ODI score for Australia in a home ODI defeat. The previous highest ODI score by an Australian at home in a defeat was 123 by Ricky Ponting in the 1996 Melbourne ODI against Sri Lanka.
Another record for Rohit:
89 – Number of sixes Rohit Sharma has hit in International cricket against Australia; the most by any player against a particular opposition across all the three International formats. Chris Gayle has 88 sixes to his name in International cricket against England.
New partnership records in ODI format:
2 – Australia’s innings is only the 2nd time where 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th wickets recorded fifty-plus stands in the same ODI innings. South Africa had back to back fifty-plus stands for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th wickets against India in the 1996 Sharjah ODI.
4 – India had fifty-plus partnerships for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th wickets; the 6th such instance and the 2nd for India in ODI cricket. India had fifty-plus partnerships for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th wickets in the 2005 Jaipur ODI against Sri Lanka.
Had Rohit and Dhawan put on three more runs for the opening stand, this could have been only the 5th instance and the first for India with five fifty-plus stands in the same ODI innings.
8 – Number of fifty-run partnerships in this match; the joint-most in an ODI game. The 2015 Oval England-New Zealand ODI, 2017 Southampton England-South Africa ODI and the 2018 England-Australia Cardiff ODI also had eight fifty-run stands.
A rare knock from Dhoni:
101.85 – MS Dhoni’s batting strike-rate during his unbeaten 54-ball 55 is his highest in a run-chase since the start of 2016 where he played 15 and more deliveries. Dhoni played more than 15 deliveries in 17 ODI chases in this span but had 90+ S/R in this game only.
1020 – Dhoni completed 1000 runs in ODI format under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. In 31 ODI innings under Kohli, Dhoni has aggregated 1020 runs at an average of 53.68.
Not a great debut for Siraj:
76 – Runs Mohammed Siraj conceded on his ODI debut; the 2nd most runs conceded by any Indian on ODI debut. Karsan Ghavri conceded 83 runs in the 11 overs he bowled during the 1975 CWC game against England at the Lord’s.
Siraj conceded 53 runs on his T20I debut against New Zealand in the 2017 Rajkot T20I. Those are the 2nd most runs conceded by an Indian on T20I debut behind Joginder Sharma’s 57 in the 2007 WT20 game against England.
