Bangabandhu T20 Cup, 2020: 18-year-old Parvez Hossain smashes a 42-ball century in a record chase

The Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka had been providing moderate totals for the Bangabandhu T20 Cup until Tuesday when Minister Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal produce run havoc during the afternoon match. Batting first, the Rajshahi team got a 131-run opening stand in only 12.2 overs. Najmul Hossain Shanto hit 11 sixes during his 55-ball 109 while his partner Anisul Islam scored 69 off 39.

They ended up with 220/7 in their 20 overs despite a hat-trick from Kamrul Islam Rabbi in the final over. The chase was anchored by skipper Tamim Iqbal who made 53 from 37 balls but the key destructor turned out to be Parvez Hossain Emon. The 18-year-old smashed an unbeaten 100 from only 42 balls with nine fours and seven sixes as Barishal team chased down the target with eight wickets and 1.5 overs to spare.

Here are all the statistical highlights from a rare high-scoring T20 match hosted by Dhaka:

1 – The 221-run chase by Fortune Barishal is now the highest successful T20 chase on Bangladesh soil. The previous highest was 206 by Khulna Tigers earlier this year in 2019-20 BPL against Dhaka Platoon.


2 – Najmul Hossain Shanto became the first player from Bangladesh to score multiple centuries in a calendar year in the Twenty20 format. He scored an unbeaten 115 at the start of the year for Khulna Tigers against Dhaka Platoon.


2 – Centuries from Najmul Hossain and Parvez Hossain made the game between Rajshahi and Barishal only the 2nd T20 game in Bangladesh with two individual centuries. The other such instance came during the 2019 BPL when Alex Hales and Rilee Rossouw scored 100 runs apiece for Rangpur Riders against Chittagong Vikings.


11 – The 11 sixes struck by Najmul Hossain are the joint-most by any player from Bangladesh in a T20 inning. Tamim Iqbal also hit as many as 11 sixes during his unbeaten 141 during the 2019 BPL final for Comilla Victorians against Dhaka Dynamites.


18y 179d – Parvez Hossain Emon, at the age of 18 years and 179 days, became the youngest player from Bangladesh to score a century in the Twenty20 format. The previous youngest was Anamul Haque who was 21 years and 10 days old when he scored 105 during the 2013 Victory Day T20 Cup.


28 – A total of 28 sixes were struck by Minister Rajshahi (18) and Fortune Barishal (10) during Tuesday’s match; the 2nd most number of maximums during a T20 game hosted by Bangladesh. The 2014 WT20 match hosted by Sylhet between Netherlands and Ireland witnessed as many as 30 sixes.

  


42 – Parvez Hossain Emon’s 42-ball century is now the fastest by a player from Bangladesh in professional cricket. Mashrafe Mortaza’s 50-ball hundred during the 2016 Dhaka Premier Division tournament was the previous fastest ton by a Bangladesh player in professional cricket. The previous fastest T20 ton by a player from Bangladesh is of 51 balls by Najmul Hossain Shanto when he scored 115 in January this year for Khulna Tigers.


441 – A total of 441 runs were scored by Minister Rajshahi and Fortune Barishal during Tuesday’s fixture which are the 2nd most runs aggregated during a T20 game hosted by Bangladesh. The highest aggregated T20 match in Bangladesh is 460 runs during the 2019-20 BPL game between Chattogram Challengers (238/4) and Cumilla Warriors (222/7) hosted by Chattogram.
