Though the Indian Premier League is a domestic T20 tournament, the quality of cricket is certainly on par with international standards. The presence of all the best players around the world makes the league even more competitive. Due to the quality of players on each side, it is very difficult to consistently perform throughout the tournament. However, we have seen in the past that performances in the IPL are usually rewarded with a spot on the national team. The likes of Chahal, Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have made it to the Indian setup only through IPL.
Ben Laughlin, the Australian cricketer is currently associated with the Rajasthan Royals. He last played for Australia in ODIs in 2009 and T20s in 2013. The 35-year old expects to make a comeback into the Australian team through the IPL. However, it is going to be difficult for Laughlin as he has to fight for his spot in the playing XI especially after the match-winning performance of Jofra Archer.
Age is just a number
Conditions in Australia and India are totally different. Bowlers have to adjust their lengths and pace accordingly. “The wickets in Australia offer bounce which makes it easy for a quick bowler. Bowling on Indian pitches is challenging as one has to adjust and bowl accordingly. The heat makes it more difficult but eventually it is wonderful to challenge your limits,” Laughlin was quoted as saying by hindustantimes.com.
Ben is a death-overs specialist and has done exceedingly well in the KFC Big Bash. In the 109 matches that he has played for Adelaide Strikers, he has picked up 140 wickets. The fast bowler also believes that having Steve Smith would have been great for the side but Rahane has done well to hold the team together. The team is picking up well under Rahane’s leadership and the presence of Shane Warne has done well.
The fast bowler has picked up six wickets in five games. “I am looking to make a comeback to the Australia team. IPL has helped many cricketers get into their national teams, I am also looking at it with that frame of mind. It has been so much learning being around Shane (Warne). I would like to get better and prove my mettle,” added Laughlin. He needs to make the most of the few opportunities that he will get for Rajasthan Royals to make his dream of playing for Australia once again come true.
