Former New Zealand cricketer Brendon McCullum had a decent season in the Indian Premier League this year. He was unfortunate to see his franchise, Gujarat Lions, crashing out of the race for the playoffs after a lackluster cumulative effort. He had been on the Lions’ roster since the previous of the tournament when the franchise made its debut in the tournament.

Prior to that, Brendon McCullum was with the power-packed lineup of the Chennai Superkings in the IPL. There were a lot of confusions over what the salary caps would be for the players of the suspended franchise Chennai Superkings and Rajasthan Royals when they turn up for the Rising Pune Supergiant and the Gujarat Lions. The same confusion came to the fore again recently.

In a post by a New Zealand website, there were reports that Brendon McCullum was one of the top buys of the season with $1.67m NZD to his name in the IPL 2017. McCullum was quick to cite the mistake and corrected the same on the social media with a tweet. He joked that if the amount had been as high as that, he would have been at a much better state. McCullum tweeted, “I was on $700k NZD not $1.67m NZD.  I wd have a bigger mower if that was the case.”

He further added that his pay is same as what he used to get for the Chennai Superkings. There is a deduction in the overall salary cap though. He added, “I get what i was on @ChennaiIPL. Yes i was bought for 7.5 crore but i dont get that. It was a salary cap deduction only.”

KP joins the discussion

English cricketer and one of the commentators of IPL this year, Kevin Pietersen, joined the discussion and noted that he would like to see Brendon McCullum in the commentary box next year. And that would surely fetch him more money. Kevin Pietersen tweeted, “Soon you’ll be with us in the comm box bud. Get lots more in there & don’t sweat!”

McCullum caught the joke right and responded in a funny manner too. He wrote that being in the comm box will surely be a job with lesser pressure. He wrote, “Ahahahaha. Better pay, no pressure and finally i will average 50 in Test Cricket! Will be sweet as bro!! Haha”
