In the recent days, the natural calamities have hit the cricket world severely. Two iconic venues James Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla and Dominica’s Windsor Park Stadium were damaged by the hurricances Irma and Maria recently. In order to raise funds for their reconstruction, a T20I match is set to be played between Windies and the World XI.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) President Giles Clarke will be coordinating the one off fixture. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted the match an international status as well. The match will be played at the iconic venue at Lord’s on May 31 this year. In a recent development, the organizers have announced the captain for the World XI team.
English skipper Eoin Morgan is set to lead the side against the T20 World Champions Windies, who recently qualified for the World Cup 2019. As per the recent quotes in Cricbuzz, Eoin Morgan expressed his happiness over being elected as the captain of the team. He hopes to contribute in the noble cause.
“I am delighted to captain the ICC World XI at Lord’s in May against the West Indies. The cricket family always comes together to support worthwhile causes and this one-off T20I, featuring some of the best players in the world will be a great spectacle at the home of cricket. I am sure the sporting public will come out in force and help raise money and awareness towards restoring parts of the Caribbean hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September last year, which ripped through many communities in this beautiful part of the world,” mentioned Eoin Morgan.
ECB pleased to have Eoin Morgan on board
Meanwhile, the ECB has also expressed their delight at Eoin Morgan accepting the offer to lead the World XI side. They are happy to be working for a good case. The ECB Chief mentioned that Morgan has been a phenomenal skipper and hence, having him in the team is a great move. More players will be added to the team as the time progresses.
“Two category 5 hurricanes in two weeks last year devastated parts of the Caribbean and the world of cricket was keen to show support with a fundraising initiative. What better way to do that than staging a world-class game at the Home of Cricket!” England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) president Giles Clarke quoted.
“Eoin Morgan as captain is a wonderful first name on the ICC World XI team sheet and in due course we’ll have more players from around the world lending their support to what I’m sure will be a highly entertaining and competitive day of cricket at Lord’s in May,” he added.
