India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in match No. 27 of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, February 15.
After Salman Ali Agha won the toss and opted to bowl first, some experts were taken by surprise as chasing isn't easy at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The skipper, however, played a masterstroke as he bowled himself in the first over and dismissed the dangerous Abhishek Sharma for a duck.
However, Ishan Kishan went berserk inside the powerplay en route to a 27-ball half-century. He slammed the Pakistani bowlers to all areas of the park during his 77-run knock off 40 balls. Tilak Varma, however, struggled to break the shackles at the other end.
Kishan contributed 76 in the 87-run partnership he had with Tilak. After Saim Ayub dismissed Kishan, Pakistan pulled things back commendably. Interestingly, Agha introduced the much-talked-about Usman Tariq into the attack as late as the 11th over.
Tariq and Ayub bowled superbly through the middle overs to peg India back. Ayub dismissed Tilak and Hardik Pandya off consecutive deliveries in the 15th over. Suryakumar Yadav held the innings together and would have wanted to finish the innings on a high, but his 32-run knock was ended by Tariq in the penultimate over.
The last over bowled by Shaheen Afridi turned out to be quite eventful as it had two fours, one six, and two wickets in it.
In reply, Pakistan got off to a dreadful start as the first over from Hardik Pandya turned out to be a wicket-maiden. The following over was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, and he bagged two wickets. Pakistan slumped to 13/3 and needed a resurrection.
Usman Khan and Babar Azam decided to steady the ship, but Axar Patel broke the partnership in the fifth over. The former tried to fight the battle single-handedly as he made 44 off 34 balls. However, the rest of the Pakistani batters struggled against the disciplined effort from the Indian bowlers.
In the end, Pakistan were bowled out for 114 in 18 overs, with Hardik, Bumrah, Axar, and Varun Chakaravarthy bagging two wickets apiece. Kuldeep Yadav and Tilak also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
