The weekend encounter of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 saw Sri Lanka and India come out on top against Ireland and arch-rivals Pakistan by nine and four wickets respectively, and make some much-needed advancements in the Group 1 and 2 points table.

In the first game, the Sri Lankans were just too good for Ireland as they showcased an outstanding bowling performance that saw the Irish batters failing to take off at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Their batting performances saw a collective failure with only power-hitter Paul Stirling (34) and Harry Tector (45) making contributions that helped Ireland finish with a respectable score of 128/8.

Spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana starred with two wickets each. However, the total was never good enough to intimidate the reigning Asia Cup champions who were on the attack right from the word 'go' as Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva added 63 runs for the opening stand. Mendis remained unbeaten on 68 runs from 43 balls as the Lankans got past the line with five overs to spare.

The second game of the day was an edge-of-the-seat thriller at the MCG that gave the fans their money's worth with Virat Kohli standing tall yet again against the Pakistanis in the T20 World Cup history. Bowling first, the Men in Blue were right on target, removing the big guns Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan cheaply and at one stage, it appeared as if Pakistan's middle-order would yet again be exposed early.

Nonetheless, that was not to be as half-centuries from Shan Masood (52*) and Iftikhar Ahmed (51) took them to a competitive total of 159/8. Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya picked up three wickets each. India in reply lost their openers early and were reeling at 31/4 before Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya (40) steadied the ship with a 113-run stand for the fifth wicket. Kohli remained unbeaten till the very end and scored 82 runs off 53 balls.
