The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for England. They have played seven T20Is, winning five games and losing just two. Just before the T20 World Cup 2026, England toured Sri Lanka to play three ODIs and as many T20Is. The entire T20I series was played at the aforementioned venue, and England managed to whitewash the hosts 3-0.
England's first T20I appearance in Kandy came during the 2012 T20 World Cup. They faced the West Indies in that edition in Kandy on September 27. On the back of Johnson Charles' 56-ball 84, the Windies posted 179/5. Chris Gayle also scored 58 off 35 deliveries. In reply, Alex Hales scored a sedate half-century on a tricky surface. However, two out of the top three batters were dismissed for ducks. Jonny Bairstow played a peculiar 18-run knock off 29 balls, and Eoin Morgan's enterprising half-century went in vain. The European giants finished on 164/4, losing by 15 runs.
Meanwhile, in the last T20I played by England at the venue, they scored 146/9, with Phil Salt scoring a gritty 62 off 40 balls. In reply, Sri Lanka's batting came a cropper as they were bowled out for just 95 in 16.4 overs. Will Jacks, who had contributed with an important cameo down the order, was the pick of the bowlers, as he finished with figures of 3/22 in four overs. Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid also chipped in with two scalps apiece.
Jacob Bethell is the leading run-getter in the T20 World Cup for England. In five matches, he has scored 146 runs at an average of 29.20 and a strike rate of 132.72. Meanwhile, two England bowlers have picked up eight wickets each so far and they are Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer.
