Rajasthan Royals (RR) have done well so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, winning all three matches to top the points table. A major credit for this impressive journey goes to Riyan Parag, who is finally paying back the franchise's years of investment in him. He has made match-winning contributions in every match and it looks like we are witnessing a 2.0 version of Riyan Parag this season.
Parag has been trolled and criticised a lot on social media for poor form and attitude issues, but recently he has proved his mettle in the Ranji Trophy and continues to do so in the ongoing IPL season. Unlike previous years, the 22-year-old was promoted to number four instead of playing as a finisher. He started the season with a 29-ball 43 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Many raised their eyebrows when the 22-year-old played a sublime knock against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their second match. While the rest of the batters struggled to find runs, Parag hit 84 off 45 balls to help his team post a competitive total and eventually win the game by 12 runs. His fine form continued in the next match when RR struggled to chase down a low score against Mumbai Indians (MI). When their top-order failed to shine, Parag took his team over the finish line with a 39-ball 54.

What is Riyan Parag’s IPL salary?
Parag got an IPL contract at the 2019 auction when RR picked him up for 20 lakhs. In his debut year, he played seven matches and scored 160 runs, including a half-century, becoming the youngest player to score an IPL fifty at the age of 17 years and 175 days. The young lad looked promising, but in the following years, he failed to live up to expectations, or in fact, was a disappointment.
The Royals released him ahead of the 2022 mega-auction, but they re-bought him as a long-term investment given his potential. Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals also showed interest in the Assam cricketer but RR managed to win the bidding war for Rs 3.8 crore. Despite some serious backing over the years, Parag has been in the news only for the wrong reasons and not for his performance.
But now everything seems to be falling into place for the Mohali-based franchise, and hard work and self-belief are paying off for Parag. “For 3-4 years I haven't performed well (in the IPL.) When the performances are not coming, you get back to the drawing board. I practised really hard, I have practised these kind of scenarios,” Parag said after guiding RR to a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in challenging conditions.
Parag showed more responsibility, maturity and ability than other seasons. It will be interesting to see how he fares in the upcoming matches.
